NEW DELHI: The Indian U-16 National Team registered a 2-1 win over Egypt’s Al-Ahly Club in their first match of the India-Egypt Friendship Cup 2017 in Cairo, Egypt.

Strikes from Bekey Oram (18’) and Rohit Danu (46’) led the Indian Colts to an impressive win over their opponents, after Al-Ahly had minimized their deficit through a penalty kick in the 28th minute.

In an attacking display, the Colts tried to find the goal from the whistle and a 5th minute shot by Sailo gave a strong statement of the intent as the shot forced the opposition custodian to make a fine save. In the 17th minute, Bekey’s long shot was kept out by the Al-Ahly custodian and a minute later the Indian Colts sprung into the lead after Bekey netted the ball.

However, the lead was shortlived and in the 28th minute, Al-Ahly pulled a goal back through Ali, who scored from the penalty spot. After the Teams went into the tunnel at half-time on level pegging, the Colts came out all guns blazing in the second half.

And Rohit Danu blasted the ball home in the 46th minute to give the Indian U-16 Colts the lead. The Indian Colts maintained the pressure on the opponents but failed to lodge more goals. However, they came close to finding the net in the 80th minute when Sailo’s freekick was palmed away by the opposition goalkeeper.

The full-time scoreline read 2-1 as the Indian Colts registered their win over Al-Ahly. The India U-16 Team takes on Smouha Club tomorrow (April 23, 2017) in Cairo, Egypt.
