Having started in 2007-08 the I-League boasts a rich history of legacy clubs and players that have mesmerised fans across the country.
Dempo SC (2007-08, 2009-10, 2011-12) are the most successful club in the I-League, having won it thrice. Churchill Brothers FC Goa (2008-09, 2012-13), Mohun Bagan AC (2014-15, 2019-20), Bengaluru FC (2013-14, 2015-16), and Gokulam Kerala FC (2020-21, 2021-22) have won two titles each.
Since the 2019-20 season, the I-League champions gain promotion to the ISL. Meanwhile, the top two teams from I-League 2 gain promotion to the I-League.
The I-League, is played in a round-robin home-and-away format between 12 teams, taking the league across different terrains, altitudes, and weather conditions.
