NEW DELHI: In an age where ‘Hash-tags (#)’ trend faster than Lionel Messi’s burst of speed and ‘Likes’ or ‘Shares’ are garnered in a couple of minutes, Social Networking has become the face of the Gen-Y and probably a force to acknowledge, if not reckon with.
It’s also about numbers and they speak for themselves.
200,431 (as on October 26, 2015 – 1pm) is the number of followers for the Indian Football Team Official Facebook Page and 15.2K (as on October 26, 2015 – 1pm) stay the number of followers for @AIFFMedia, the Official Twitter Page for Indian Football Team, also AIFF’s Official Twitter Handle.
@AIFFMedia grew in numbers and in four months, the Official Twitter Handle had accumulated close to 13,000 Followers.
Not only the two platforms present the Indian fans a minute-to-minute updates of every National Team game but also give exclusive access with a never seen before exclusive behind the scenes of the National Teams. This, added with regular updates about the National Teams, Tournaments and Promotional Activities took Indian Football to a never witnessed before coverage on Social Media.
All of this would have never been possible if the fans, the young populace and the Gen-Y failed to ignore, acknowledge and acclimatize to the strides of Indian Football. In times where everything is available at the swoosh of a finger or a press of a button, online campaigns have proved to be effective and successful, bringing people together if only through a common cause.
In retrospect, it all started on May 31, 2015 when Bengaluru FC hosted Mohun Bagan in what was a stellar finale to a sterling Hero I-League season. While a jam-packed Kanteerava bore witness to one of the most pulsating games of Indian Football’s history, fans who were afar from the action flocked on to Twitter and trended the hash-tag #BFCvMMB in India.
Gen-Y acknowledged Indian Football. Perhaps the young populace wanted to indulge in the Football of the land. And perhaps it marked a new beginning.
Come June 11, the mass-excitement was there again as India clashed swords against Oman in the Russia 2018 World Cup Preliminary Joint Round Qualification.
#INDvOMA trended in India on Match-day, further elaborating the definition of a new generation Football fan which was no longer held in precinct by the stereotypes of ‘being right in the thick of action.’ Complimenting the colors of the National Team, ‘#BackTheBlue’ was born and it enabled the Indian Fans to joust in unison for his Country.
Thereafter, the hashtag spread like wildfire.
#BackTheBlue and #Indianfootball were used by myriad of fans and India was finally waking up and creating a buzz on Social Media. Next ‘Aditi Chauhan’ trended on Facebook, as she became the first Indian Player to play in England, further asserting the importance and the tenacity of the Indian Football fan.
