Role Overview
The League Commissioner is the senior executive responsible for the overall governance, integrity, commercial growth, and sporting success of the Indian Super League (ISL). The role ensures the league operates in line with national and international football regulations while driving development, stakeholder alignment, and long-term sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and execute long-term league strategies aligned with AIFF, AFC, and FIFA frameworks
Oversee league expansion, competition format, and calendar planning in line with the directions of the Governing Council and Management Committee.
Governance & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with AIFF, AFC, FIFA statutes and regulations
- Uphold league integrity, ethics, and fair play standards
- Oversee disciplinary frameworks, licensing requirements, and club compliance
Competition & Football Operations
- Supervise all on-field and competition-related matters
- Coordinate scheduling, match operations, refereeing, and VAR/equivalent implementation
- Work closely with technical committees, referees, and match officials
Stakeholder Management
- Act as the primary liaison between clubs, AIFF, broadcasters, sponsors, and commercial partners
- Manage relationships with club owners, CEOs, and sporting directors
- Represent the ISL at national and international football forums
Commercial & Brand Growth
- Support commercial strategy alongside, commercial partners
- Enhance league brand value, fan engagement, and market reach
- Collaborate with broadcast partners to optimize league presentation and content
Financial Oversight
- Oversee league budgets and financial governance frameworks as approved by the Governing Council and Management Committee
- Ensure financial sustainability and transparency across league operations
- Monitor club financial health in coordination with licensing bodies
Crisis & Risk Management
- Lead responses to operational, legal, or reputational risks
- Serve as chief spokesperson during league-related crises when required
Preferred Qualifications & Experience
- Graduation or equivalent qualification
- Senior leadership experience in professional football administration or related industries
- Strong understanding of global football governance and competition structures
- Proven experience in stakeholder management
- Experience working with broadcasters, sponsors, and commercial partners
- Excellent negotiation, communication, and decision-making skills
- Certificate in AFC Football Administration and Management Course FIFA Management Certificate
- Experience of at least 10 years at a State-level or National-level football administration
- Proven marketing experience in football
- Knowledge of financial governance
- Certified Match Commissioner Course
- Knowledge of pitch maintenance and stadium safety procedures
- Knowledge of Player Status and Transfer Regulations
- Sound understanding of AIFF, AFC, and FIFA Constitutions
