China PR, Korea Republic into last eight as Chetthabutr gives Thailand hope

MUMBAI: Four teams – China PR, Japan, Australia and Korea Republic - booked their place in the quarterfinals at the end of Matchday Two of the Women’s AFC Asian Cup India 2022 which was played on January 23 and 24, 2022.

In Group A, eight-time champions China PR were in destructive mode, defeating Islamic Republic of Iran 7-0 with a brace from birthday girl Wang Shuang at the Mumbai Football Arena on Sunday. This result means Iran need to beat Chinese Taipei in their final Group A game to stand any chance of qualifying for the quarterfinals.

After scoring 18 times in their opening game against Indonesia, Australia were given a sterner test by the Philippines at the Mumbai Football Arena on Monday but second half goals from Sam Kerr, Emily van Egmond and Mary Fowler as well as an own goal from Dominqiue Randle ensured that the Matildas won 4-0 and entered the quarterfinals.

Thailand rode on a hat-trick from Kanyanat Chetthabutr to vanquish Indonesia 4-0 at the D.Y. Patil stadium in Navi Mumbai on Monday to give themselves a chance of getting into the last eight from Group B.

Korea Republic were made to sweat but emerged 2-0 winners against Myanmar to qualify for the quarterfinals from Group C. Lee Geum-min scored early in the second half and an own goal seven minute before the end at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Pune made sure that the Koreans will fight it out with Japan to decide top spot in Group C.

Defending champions Japan cruised past Vietnam 3-0 thanks to a brace from Yui Narumiya and one from captain Saki Kumagai in the final game of Matchday Two at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Pune on Monday.
