NEW DELHI: The pen may be mightier than the sword, but in the World of Social Media, the Hashtag (#) is probably mightier than both.

October 19, 2016 became a historic day for Indian Football as not only did Bengaluru FC became the first Indian Football Club to qualify for the AFC Cup Finals, but the whole Indian Footballing fraternity jousted behind one hashtag (#BFCvJDT) to support Bengaluru FC in their quest for Asian glory.

With #BFCvJDT trending on Social Media two days even before the match kicked-off at the Kanteerava Stadium, there was little surprise when Twitter exploded on the eve of October 19 after Bengaluru FC scripted history as wishes poured in from all over the World, let alone India.

Celebrities, Athletes and fans alike jousted behind #BFCvJDT leading to a polarization of Indian Football, witnessing unprecedented scenes in the making, as #BFCvJDT became the number one trend all across India yesterday eve.

The AIFF President Mr. Praful Patel was one of the first ones, and almost immediately after the final whistle, he tweeted: Proud of you Bengaluru FC and Congrats to Sajjan and Parth Jindal for your contribution to #IndianFootball. @sajjanjindal59 @ParthJindal11

The AIFF President followed it up with another tweet saying: Sunil Chhetri you still have all the fire in your belly. @chetrisunil11 @bengalurufc #AFCCup2016

The National Coach Stephen Constantine congratulated the Blues for the stupendous achievement. AWESOME RESULT Congratulations to @bengalurufc @MandarTamhane1 Very proud of the lads and the club History has been made

#BCFvJDT were trending at the top position in India on Twitter by that time.

Amitabh Bachchan tweeted: “T 2415 - CONGRATULATIONS team Bengaluru for entering the Finals in the AFC .. football is getting bigger by the day in INDIA ..”

While Abhishek Bachchan lauded Bengaluru FC’s efforts, tweeting: “Many congratulations to @bengalurufc! History created. 1st ever Indian team to reach the AFC cup finals. Now go with it!!”

“Proud & historic moment for #India & #Indian #football - @bengalurufc becomes 1st Indian club to reach the @AFCCup final. Congrats! #BFCvJDT”, tweeted Minister of Youth and Sports Affairs Vijay Goel.


“History has been made at the Fortress of @bengalurufc ! Well done champions, now for @theafcdotcom #BFCvJDT @ParthJindal11 @MandarTamhane1”, tweeted Aaditya Thackeray.

“Oh wow @bengalurufc, congratulations. Another step on India's footballing journey. Was a bit worried when the away goal was scored”, tweeted Harsha Bhogle.

The wishes also poured in from across the globe and Indian custodian Gurpreet Singh Sandhu taking to Twitter said, “This is what you get when u do the right the things the right way with no compromises! Congratulations @bengalurufc u make us all feel proud”

Even Bengaluru’s opponents for the night Johor Darul Ta’azim tweeted, “Congratulation Bengaluru for winning the match. It was a good game for us. We hope we can meet again next time! #BFCvJDT #AFCCup2016

Bengaluru FC’s rivals in the domestic Hero I-League had written letters of support for the Bengaluru based Club and after the Blues carved history, Hero I-League Clubs joined forces to support Roca’s squad – an unprecedented scenario in Indian Football history.

“Adversaries on the field, but supporters tonight. All the best @bengalurufc. We hope to see an Indian team in the AFC Cup final. #KEB”, said Kingfisher East Bengal on Twitter.

While Mumbai FC tweeted, “On field rivalries aside, we wish @bengalurufc the very best for today's AFC Cup semi final game against Johor. #TogtherForIndia

“WOW! Congratulations @bengalurufc the Nation is PROUD! #BFCvJDT”, said Shillong Lajong.

Even the fans that could not be at the Kanteerava Stadium to cheer their hearts out, turned into keyboard warrior donning blue and typed away their support vigorously.

“Great history by @bengalurufc Leading 3-1. 10mts to Go. They will be the first Indian club in AFC CUP Final.”, read one tweet.

“This is unreal. Leading 3-1 against the current champions. #BFCvJDT #AFCCup2016#Indianfootball

“Kanteerava on the cusp of history....electric atmosphere!! Go @bengalurufc #AFCCup#BFCvJDT”, the others read.
