NEW DELHI: The Indian U-16 Girls Team had a one-month long preparatory National Camp in Patiala, Punjab from July 24, 2016 for the AFC U-16 Qualifiers slated to kick-off from August 28, 2016 in Wei Fang, China. In a freewheeling chat with www.the-aiff.com, Head Coach Maymol Rocky spoke at length about the squad, its strengths, key areas, the work done at the Camp and a lot more. EXCERPTS:

What are the strengths of the squad?

Teamwork and unity are the strengths of the squad. If the Team works together like a well-oiled unit, we have the ability to go a long way. But if we are to be successful, the Players need to take inspiration from others and motivate themselves.

How did the National Camp help in improving the Players?

The Camp helped the Players in getting fit. We also worked on areas such as tactics, movement and striking a chord with the other Players. Overall, it helped in the exhaustive development of the Players.

Did it help in developing squad chemistry?

It certainly did! When the Players stay together for a month the squad chemistry develops automatically as they are together for almost every time of the day. One can only hope that the Players replicate the chemistry developed between them on the pitch.

What areas did the squad work on during the Camp?

Apart from fitness, the key area that the Players worked on in the Camp was knowing their role in a Team and performing it to the best of their abilities. They have been taught how to excel in their positions. Furthermore, we also worked on technicalities like positioning and coordination.
