Kolkata inch closer to the semis after 4-0 win over Goa
22 Nov 2015

Atlético de Kolkata put four past FC Goa in their 2015 Hero Indian Super League encounter at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Sunday (November 22) evening. The defending champions put on a clinical display in front of over 51,000 spectators. Sameehg Doutie brace and goals from Borja Fernandez and Iain Hume were enough to see Kolkata claim top spot in the Hero ISL table.

The visitors started brighter of the two sides and had their first shot on target inside the first minute through Dudu. Leo Moura could have given them the lead four minutes later but dragged his effort wide of goal as the Gaurs piled on the pressure early on.

It took 14 minutes for Atlético de Kolkata to have their first crack at goal with dangerman Iain Hume just putting a left-footed effort wide of goal. The home-side slowly grew into the game and broke the deadlock six minutes later through Doutie. Jaime Gavilan found Doutie free on the left with an inch-perfect pass as the Southern African youngster drilled it beyond a helpless Laxmikant Kattimani in goal to make it 1-0 for the hosts.

It was 2-0 for the reigning champions two minutes later. This time Doutie laid it off for skipper Borja who unleashed an absolute pile-driver of a shot from the edge of FC Goa’s penalty area to give his side a two-goal advantage.

Kolkata were firmly in control of the game by this point and had plenty of opportunities to extend their lead before half-time. The Goan defence though shored up things at the back and made sure they didn’t concede any more goals before the half-time interval.

Kolkata killed of the contest in the 68th minute through their top-scorer Hume. Doutie once again did brilliantly to weave his way past the Goan defence before being chopped down by a rash Raju Gaekwad tackle inside the penalty box. The referee awarded a penalty which Hume slotted past Kattimani to give his side a 3-0 lead.

It was to get worse for FC Goa 12 minutes from time with Doutie scoring his second of the night. A picture perfect pass from Ofentse Nato found Doutie whose first touch helped him go round Kattimani in goal to make it 4-0.

Kolkata ran down the clock for the remainder of the match and retained possession well against a tired FC Goa side as the referee blew the full-time whistle. The win helped propel Atlético de Kolkata to the top of the league. It was also their first clean sheet of the season. FC Goa, on the other hand, moved one place down to second in the table.
