Punjab won the 61st National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy by beating Bengal 5-3 in Tie Breaker in the Final match played at Ch Devi Lal Sports Complex ,Gurgaon on Wednesday (25 Oct 06). The teams failed to score at the end of regulation time and extra time of 30 minutes.In the Tie Breaker ,Bengal’s Suman Dutta failed to convert the penalty kick which was brilliantly stopped by Punjab Goalkeeper Kameshwar Singh. This is the seventh time that Punjab have won the coveted trophy .Union Minister of Home Mr Shiv Raj Patil who was the Chief Guest along with Haryana Chief Minister Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda presented the Trophy to Th Kameshwar Singh ,team captain of Punjab .Mr Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi ,Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Information & Broadcasting and President All India Football Federation was also present to witness the Final besides a large number of Supporters of both the teams.Mr Dasmunsi thanked the Haryana Football Association and the Govt of Haryana for their full support in the successful conduct of Santosh Trophy in Haryana.Punjab also received a Cheque for Rs Five lakhs while Bengal ,the Runners Up received Rs Three Lakhs as the prize money.

29 time champions Bengal take on Punjab in the Finals of 61st National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy at Ch Devi Lal Sports Complex ,Gurgaon ,Haryana today (25 Oct 06) and the match will kick off at 5 PM.Bengal has reached the Finals after a gap of 6 years .Bengal have been 29 times winners ,10 times Runners Up .Bengal have won the Santosh Trophy thrice in a row (1949-51) ,five years in row (1975-79) and six years in a row from 1993-99.In this edition Bengal defeated Rajasthan 8-1 ,Madhya Pradesh 5-0 & Services 1-0 in the Qualifying stage.In the Quarter Final stage Bengal beat Haryana 1-0 ,beat Punjab 1-0  and lost to Goa 0-2 and defeated Kerala 4-2 (tie breaker ) in the Semi Finals.Bengal will miss their star goalkeeper Sandip Nandy who was injured and replaced by Abhra Mondal , who defended the goal during Tie Breaker after being substituted for Kalyan Chaubey in the Semi Finals.Abhra Mondal is likely to be in the Goals as Kalyan Chaubey is nursing an injury.Bengal have a strong defence in Sanjib Maria ,Habibur Rehman Mondal ,Shyam Mondal and Bijoy Basfore.

Punjab ,the six times champions ,on the other hand were seeded directly in the Quarter Finals league and beat Goa 2-0 ,drew Haryana 0-0 and lost to Bengal 0-1 in the Quarter Final League.Punjab beat Maharashtra 2-1 in the Semi Finals.Punjab have a fair record in the Santosh trophy held in Northern India.Punjab were Champions in 1970-71(Jalandhar),1974-75(Jalandhar),1980-81(Cuttack),1984-85(Kanpur),1985-86 (Jabalpur),1987-88(Quilon).Punjab finished Runners Up in 1977-78 (Calcutta) ,1979-80(Coimbatore),1983-84(Madras),1994-95 (Madras) & Delhi 2004-05. In the 1978 they did not reach Finals at Srinagar. Punjab will miss the striker Manjit Singh who is nursing injury.Baldeep Singh ,Hardeep Singh Saini ,Sukhjinder Singh and Praveen Kumar have given lot of anxious moments to opponents in the quarter final league.Punjab hopes to get lot of fans support who are encouraging their games after Haryana failed to reach next stage. Punjab , Bengal last met in a Santosh Trophy Finals at Chennai in 1994-95 which Punjab lost 1-2 (Golden Goal) .Match will be shown "Live" on Zee Sports .

Earlier on 22 Oct 06 : Bengal reached the Finals of the 61st National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy beating Kerala 4-2 in the tie breaker in the match played at Ch Devi Lal Sports Complex ,Gurgaon ,on Sunday,22 Oct 2006. Both the sides failed to score in the regulation time and the extra time of 30 minutes. Earlier Kerala dominated the proceedings for most part of the play but failed to convert the chances. Even during the first half of the extra time ,NP Pradeep beat the goalkeeper and a resultant rebound hit the right bar.

Earlier In the first Semi Final match of the evening ,Punjab beat Maharashtra 2-1 to enter the Finals of the 61st National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy .Punjab trailed 0-1 at the half time after Abhishek Yadav scored in the 43rd minute after receiving a pass from Paresh Shivalkar in the penalty box. Punjab dominated the second half and were able to equalize in the 60th minute when Baldeep Singh converted a chance in a melee in front of Maharashtra goal.Punjab took the winning lead 2-1 six minutes later when Praveen Kumar converted a pass from the right flank from Sukhjinder Singh. In the second Semi Final 29 times champions Bengal will play Kerala at 7 PM.

Earlier on 19 Oct 06:Maharashtra will meet Punjab at 4 PM while Kerala meets Bengal at 7PM in the Semi Finals of the 61st National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy to be played on Sunday ,22nd Oct 2006.Maharashtra beat Tamilnadu 1-0 in their last Group “B” Quarter Final League match today.Both the teams were goalless at the half time mark .Adil Ansari scored through a header after he got a cross from Steven Dias from the right flank.in the 66th minute of the match.in the first Semi Final.

In the first match of the day Kerala beat Karnataka 2-1 in a Group "B" quarter final league match of 61st National Football Championship for Santosh trophy played at Ch Devi Lal Sports Complex ,Gurgaon today. Both the teams were tied 1-1 at the half time. Kerala took the lead in the 16th minute when a cross from the right flank by Joby KS beat the goalkeeper and went inside the goal. Karnataka equalised in 35th minute through a corner by Xavier Vijay Kumar which beat the goalkeeper who could not judge the ball correctly. Pradeep NP gave Kerala the winning 2-1 lead in 85th minute when he converted a Penalty .Earlier Ebin Rose of Kerala was sent off the field after he received a second yellow in the 77th minute.

Earlier on Wednesday :Bengal and Punjab entered the Semi Finals from Group “A’ of the 61st National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy after Haryana drew Goa 2-2 and Bengal beat Punjab 1-0 in their last Group “A” matches played at Ch Devi Lal Sports Complex ,Gurgaon on Wednesday.
The first match saw some improved  performance from young Haryana players.Both the teams were goalless at the half time and Goa scored the first goal through a penalty by Fredy Mascernahas in 62 Min.Haryana equalized immediately in 65th minute and took a vital 2-1 lead in the 76th minute when a left footer from Sanjeev beat the Goa Goal keeper. Goa managed to equalize in the dying moments of the game when Nicholas Borges scored through a header in the 90th minute.

The second match saw some anxious moments for Bengal before Dipendu Biswas scored in the 57th minute .Punjab failed to equalize when they failed to score in the dying seconds of the game .

Earlier on Tuesday:Tamilnadu beat Karnataka 2-0 in first match of Group “B match of the Quarter Final League played at Ch Devi Lal Sports Complex ,Gurgaon on Tuesday. Both the teams were tied goalless at the half time.Tamilnadu gained 1-0 lead after the breather when S Sathish Kumar converted a chance from the penalty box in the 68th minute. Barely had the Karnataka team settled when Jotin Singh gave them a second blow in the 71st minute to ensure the 2-0 win for Tamilnadu and Three points in the league.

Earlier on 16 Oct 06:Goa beat Bengal 2-0 in a Group “A” match of 61st National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy played at Ch. Devi Lal Sports Complex ,Gurgaon today & secured 3 points and kept their chances alive to qualify from this group .Goa led 1-0 at the half time through a goal by Peter Carvalho in the 31st minute of the game after a corner kick by Wilton Gomes was rebounded from Nabi.. Bengal were unlucky to miss a few chances .Fredy Masceranhas scored the second goal for Goa in the 91st minute (add on time) to seal the match in their favour.

Earlier on Sunday :Kerala beat Tamilnadu 3-1 in a Group “B” match of the 61st National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy played at Ch Devi Lal Sports Complex ,Gurgaon on Sunday. At half time both the teams were tied 1-1.

Abdul Nausad opened the score for Kerala in 13th minute which was equalized by Koluthungan of Tamilnadu in the 25th minute. N P Pradeep’s brace with goals in 50th & 78th minute gave Kerala the 3-1 winning score which brought great cheers to the large number of Kerala fans who thronged the stands.

In the 2nd Group “B” match of the evening Maharashtra beat Karnataka 3-0. Though Maharashtra dominated the proceedings in the first half ,the teams were goalless at the half time mark. Adil Ansari opened the scoring for Maharashtra when he scored through a cross from Abhishek Yadav in the 47th minute of the second half. Maharashtra increased the lead to 2-0 when Abhishek Yadav scored in the 64th minute after he received a pass from Adil Ansari. Paresh Shiwalkar scored the third goal for Maharashtra in the 83rd minute of the match.

Punjab beat Goa 2-0 in a Group “A” match of the 61st National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy played at Ch Devi Lal Sports Complex ,Gurgaon on Saturday .Punjab led 1-0 at the half time when Sukhjinder Singh headed the ball into the Goal after he received a neat Right Footer from Hardeep Singh Saini in the 43rd minute.Punjab dominated the proceedings for most part of the match and Manjit Singh made a good move from the left flank and scored the second goal for Punjab in the 79th minute.
Cautions : Punjab :Manjit Singh in 15th minute.
Goa : Samir Naik in 18th and Fredy Mascernehas 72nd minute.

Earlier Bengal defeated Hosts Haryana 1-0 in the first match of the Quarter Finals League with Dipendu Biswas scoring in the 2nd minute of the match.Haryana tried to equalize and put in lot of pressure in the second half but could not penetrate the strong defence of Sanjib Maria and a few remarkable saves by Sandip Nandy and Kalyan Chaube.
