Churchill Brothers ended their ONGC I-League 2009/10 campaign on a thumping note thrashing Air India 5-1 in their final round encounter played at the Nehru Stadium, Margao here on Friday.
A brace by both of their Nigerian recruits, Odafe Onyeka Okolie and Felix Chimaokwu helped Churchill to notch up the runners up trophy with 43 points, while the result didn’t bother for Air India as they once again avoided the drop with Shillong Lajong FC and Sporting Clube-de Goa facing the relegation. The Airmen finish their I-League journey with 28 points.
The former I-League champions could have scored at least five goals in the first half but it was woodwork that kept them at bay. Felix shot in the 14th minute hit the woodwork , while minute later Odafe Onyeka Okolie right footer too saw rattling the cross-bar.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 21st minute, when Odafe scored with his trademark style. The Nigerian marksman dodged past three defenders before placing his right footer to the right of Air India goalkeeper Kunal Sawant. Felix and Odafe once again were denied by the woodwork in the 38th minute, while Felix header was saved off the line four minutes later as the scoreline read 1-0 at half time.
It was totally one way traffic for the Churchill Brothers in the both the halves. Odafe doubled his side lead in the 60th minute, while Felix finally found his name in the scoresheet with a solo effort in the 68th minute. Air India pulled one back in the 73rd minute through N. D.Opara. The Nigerian striker headed in a cross from the right to decrease the deficit, but minute later Felix completed his brace taking advantage of a defensive error. Jason Vales put the final nail in the Airmen coffin in the 80th minute with a 25 yard scorcher as Churchill ended their I-league journey on a high. |
