EVENT INFORMATION:

The First National Football League was held in 1996-97 with 8 Teams and JCT were the winners and Churchill Brothers , Goa finished Runners Up. The aim was to develop professionalism in Indian Football .In 1997-98 the number of teams was raised to 10.and in 1998-99 it was raised to 12 teams The system of relegation started in the 3^rd National Football League. Two teams were promoted and two teams were relegated .In the 2004-05 season four teams were relegated and only two teams were Promoted.

The First I League had 10 teams of which Salgaocar SC Goa & Viva Kerala were promoted teams from the Second Division .

The Second edition of  I league has 12 teams with four teams  namely Mumbai FC ,Chiragh United ,Mohammedan Sporting and Vasco SC promoted from the Second Division. Viva Kerala and Salgaocar SC were relegated from the first edition will take part in the Second Division.

The second edition of ONGC I league kicks off on 26^th Sep 08 with Federation Cup winners Kingfisher East Bengal playing Chiragh United SC and at Barasaat ,Kolkata and Vasco SC hosting Sporting Clube de Goa at PJN Stadium , Margao, Goa.

ONGC I league in the season 2008-09 carries a record Cash prize of over Rs 1.25 Crores.  

The details of Prize Money is :

1.Winners - Rs 50 lakhs

2.Runners Up - Rs 28 Lakhs

3.Team finishing at Third Position - Rs 20 Lakhs

4.Team finishing at Fourth position - Rs 10Lakhs

5.Fair Play Team - Rs One Lakh

6.Best Striker –Rs 50,000/-

7.Best Goalkeeper –Rs 25,000/-

8.Best Defender –Rs 25,000/-

9.Best Midfielder –Rs 25,000/-

10.Best Forward –Rs 25,000/-

11.Best Player –Rs 25,000/-

12.Man of the Match :Rs 5,000/-
