The name of Salgaocar Sports Club occupies a place of pride in the annals of the history of football in India. Crowd pullers in whichever part of the country they play in, especially in Goa, Salgaocar SC has distinguished themselves in football right from 1956 when the club was founded to promote football talent in Goa. One of the leading football teams in India with a tradition of winning tournaments consistently year after year, Salgaocar SC is also known for its fair play and sporting culture

Salgaocar Football Team was the first Goan team to participate in the prestigious Durand Football Tournament in New Delhi after Goa's liberation in 1961. Late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru felicitated the team at his residence. That was just the beginning of a long and triumphant association at the national level for the past fifty-one years, an association which has seen Salgaocar’ successfully annex all possible trophies in the Indian circuit by winning the  National League in 1999, Federation Cup thrice in 1988, 1989 & 1997, the Super Cup in 1997 & 1999, the prestigious Rovers Cup, Mumbai, in 1989, 1996 & 1999, the Durand Cup, Delhi, twice in 1999 & 2003, the Sait Nagjee, Calicut, in 1987 and TFA shield at Madurai, in 1979. Salgaocar Sports Club have been crowned Goa State Champions for a record 19 times including winners for 3 consecutive years of the Goa Professional League in 2002-2003, 2003-2004 and 2004-2005. The Club has also won the Governor’s Cup in the years 1999 and 2001. The late 1990’s saw Salgaocar SC consistently bag trophies such as the Federation Cup, the National League, the Durand Cup, Rovers Cup and the Super Cup, thus understandably earning the sobriquet “Soccer Kings”.

At the international level, Salgaocar Sports Club, had the distinction of representing India as its Champion Club in the IX & X ASIAN CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS in 1989 at Muscat & 1990 at Dhaka respectively. Again in 1999 the Club had the distinction of representing the Country in the IX ASIAN CUP WINNERS CUP.

Players like Bruno Coutinho, Bramhanand Shankhwalkar, Lawrence Gomes, Franky Baretto, Bento Andrew, Arnold Rodrigues, Roy Baretto, Robert Fernandes, Derrick Pereirra and current team coach Savio Madeira were legends whose fame extended beyond the shores of Goa thus not only permanently engraving their names in the history of the club and the hearts of its fans, but also as top quality Indian players bring laurels to the country.

The adage goes, “What maketh a man isn’t how he falls, but the grace by which he rises up again.” Season 2005-06 saw Salgaocar SC relegated to the Second Division National Football League (SDNFL). However, with determination the club capped an unbeaten record in the Second Division National Football League thus keeping our promise to our fans that we would bounce back to where we belong, THE TOP FLIGHT OF INDIAN FOOTBALL.

This season we are back in the I-League with a pledge that we will try to keep our flag flying high and try to repay the faith shown in us by our legion of fans by trying to meet their expectations and making them proud.

Salgaocar Youth Development System

The future is the youth and at Salgaocar SC we believe that with the right guidance and coaching inputs, it won’t be long before the next big superstar hails from India. We believe that the Youth System isn’t about winning, its about developing top quality players who will go on to don the colours, both, of our club and country. With as many as 7 age-group teams, right up from U-12 till U-20, Salgaocar SC have gone about in the right earnest of promoting soccer talent in the country. With as many as 1000 players showing up for trials in total for all age-group teams, it shows not only that young players aspire to don our green and white, but also shows that the parents of these young players are confident in our abilities of helping their children realize their dreams of being a football star.

The Youth coaching wing is looked after by Mr. Francisco Bruto da Costa, Manager Youth Development. He is assisted by 3 coaches, Mr. Micdomio Rebello, Mr. Cajetan Fernandes and Mr. Soccoro Vaz. Mr. Ignatius Dias coordinates the youth teams.

In order to ensure that there are no hiccups in training, Salgaocar SC makes sure that sufficient grounds and training facilities are made available. Each youth team is given their share of equipment so as to enable the players to develop their talent. Such has been our success with the youth system, that many of our junior players have already made an impact in the senior team.
